New doors were added, also a plaque was placed above with the inscription “Purple Valley United Church". In 1955, a tile floor was installed in the church. minister of the charge is Rev. J. TEE PURPLE VALLEY ORANGE LODGE: ITS BEGINNINGS The first settlers of what is now Purple Valley were all enthusiastic Orangemen; in fact, the Watchcrn brothers, John and Charles, and their sons, Webster John's son and Thomas, William, and Henry Charles' sons originated from Northern Ireland, the birthplace of Orangeiem. Therefore, one of the first things they did was organize an Orange Lodge. At first, Lodge meetings were held at COIpcys Bay, but a few years later, in 1871, a school was erected at rurple Valley. This building came to serve the community as a school, as a church, and as an Orange Hall. The school house had long wooden benches with desks in front and in one corner upon a bracket shelf near the ceiling was a chest which was kept stoutly padlocked. In that chest, according to the Orange legend, was where the goat was kept. The same chest is on the platform of the present hall â€" I guess they still keep the goat there.
