U -10- crop of turnips that his ingenuity was sorely taxed finding places to store them. No less than three apple orchards were planted on Hambly land, the first of which was probably planted as early as 1880 on Lot 29. The orchard nearest the present residence on Lot 26 was planted by my grandfather probably between 1880 and 1885. At first my ancestors had to haul or carry water from a waterâ€"hole some distance away. Then, about l883 or I884 my grandfather hired an old man by the name of John Higgins to blast a well between the house and barn. In 1888 my greatâ€" grandfather hired one Chas. Baines to drill him a well on the west end of Lot 26. In 1891 my grandfather had John Wright drill him a well not far from his residence. This well, very little over twenty feet deep, was a good well, and still serves our needs today. The present brick residence was erected in I903. In connection with the building of it I have heard a number of names mentioned, the more notable of which were Richard Tremaine and, if I am not mistaken, James McDonagh, or some such name. The telephone was installed between 1915 and 1920 by the Gillies telephone company. The electricity was installed in 1957, the pressure system and bathroom the following year. Following my greatâ€"grandfather's death in 189;, my grandfather took over all his property. My greatâ€"5randfather's hQuSc was later torn down, and my grandfather's residence became the main seat of the Hamblys in Purple Valley. And it should be noted, this residence has remained the main seat of the Hamblys down through the years. My grandfather had his father's 30 x 42 frame barn moved from the west end of Lot 26 to a position near his own barn. This was accomplished about 1908. In April, 1915, my father took over all my grandfather's property in Purple Valley. It was my father that had the telephone, electricity, pressure system and bathroom installed. And in 1951 he moved the 30 x 42 frame barn a few feet to the northeast and joined it to my grandfather's 4o x +0 frame barn by building a thrashingâ€"floor between. The result was the present 40 x 98 frame barn. Then, in 1955 he erected a 26 X 45 frame drive shed. Two different years my father did some reforestation. Once, about twenty years ago, he planted a number of spruce and pine in a large clearing in a bush-lot. Then, in 1962, he planted 2000 pine and spruce in various clearings on two lots, the last work my father was to do.
