1 This View of the village of nonwooo was taken in 1866 by Peter Phillips, who For some time had a small studio on Peterborough St., Just east of the stone building occupied by the late J. L. Squire & Sons. The camera was placed on the vacant lot where the Presbyterian Church now stands, and consequently only shows that part of the village west of the concession. To the few residing here now, who were residents at that time, this View will be of great interest. and will awaken memories of persons and places that have long since passed away. There were then but four brick buildings in the village, namely, the Anglican Church, the old school house, later taken down to make way for Mr. Grower's beautiful residence, the building one time occupied by Ira Cummings as a machine shop, and the cottage on Ridge St. built by the late Dr. Poole, and one time occupied by James Harper as a dwelling. The village at the time of this picture was not incorporated, and formed part of the municipality of Asphodel, with the late F. M. Grover as Reeve, and the late W. H. Stephenson as Clerk. There was no town hall in those days and the meetings of the Council as well as the sessions of the Division Court were held in the upper flat of the old sshool house. The High School, which had been established some twelve years before, was conducted on the ground floor under the principalship of that ver efficient teacher afterwards known as the Rev. Peter Wright, D.D. Many of the old buildings are easily identified. Beginning at the left there is seen a part of the old hotel at that time occupied by the late John A. Johnson| and the gate through which issued every morni e stage for Peterboro.
