For Home and Country Welcome to the annual Mar Women ’5 Institute Fish Dinner! We thought you might like to know a little more about the Women's Institute - and what we do - besides Fish dinners, Potlucks, and great pies! - Firstly, we are a branch of a large, international organization - over 6 million members, Our most famous international member is Queen Elizabeth II, - The Women’s Institute was founded in Canada on February 19, 1897. - The Mar branch was founded in 1905 s For more than 100 years, Women's Institute (WI) members have actively worked together for the betterment of members' families, homes and communities. The original focus â€" domestic science education - quickly expanded to include personal growth opportunities, government lobbying and health and community wellness initiatives. - Our list of accomplishments as an organizatlon includes the following: Nationally In Mari“ ‘ lines on highways * preserve and maintain the historic Mar Schoolhouse * free school immunization programs * assist local families in times of hardship * ralsed $850,000 in WW1 and donated “ support local charities such as: School breakfast it to the Canadian Red Cross club; Women's shelter; Salvation Army; Community * supported the war effort by outï¬tting a Living, & the Outdoor Enwronment faCIIltv. hospital ship 8: ï¬eld kitchens * (Io-ordinate & provide main meal of the day for * in WWII raised $1Million in donations for member families in time of illness the Canadian Red Cross * serve on the Wiarton Hospital Auxiliary B: the “ funded ï¬eld kitchens, knitted 115 million Gateway Auxiliary articles for the forces * knit hats and scarves for the Salvation Army * sent comfort boxes to Canada's servicemen * Make and donate quilts to the OPP for children * active in developing women’s assistance programs experiencing trauma in an accident We'd like to thank you for joining our major fund raising event of the year.
