Quilt shm’iï¬h ’s‘iiccess _ On Saturday, May 5, 2007. the Women‘s Institutes of Colpoy's Bay, Purple Valley. Mar, and Oliphant, opened their Halls to show us a luscious rainbow of colours and patterns. It was the first show of “Quilting and Hooking on the Bruce" organized by Mothers‘ Fabric in Wiarton. More than 140 people. some from as far away as Nova Scotia. pur- chased ‘passport tickets" to have them stamped at each of the Halls and then entered at Mothers‘ Fabric in a draw for a gift basket packed full of dOnated items. The winner of this basket was Sheila Innis from Lion‘s Head. While on the tour of the beautiâ€" fully decorated Halls. the travelâ€" ers saw hooked rugs and other items provided by hookers from several groups in the area. These fascinating objects, made of strips of wool fabric hooked into burlap or monk’s cloth, were made fol- lowing traditional pauerns as well as patterns that told personal sto- ries. The passion and skill of the artists was obvious. No less interesting were the quilts. We saw designs such as a raggy quilt made in the shape of a giant teddy bear. an old quilt made from sugar sacks. babies blankets, well»used log cabin quilts, butterfly quilts. reversible quilts. quilts full of flowers and intricate designs and matched colours. lap blankets. a gorgeous quilted jacket. smali pictures and wall hangings. Christmas tree skirts and quiltsiwith ‘- photographs printed on the fabric. Some quilts had only two colours and others had more colours than could be count- ed. Some were made from quilting fabric and others were made from a family’s old clothes (fabrics recog- nizad by some viewâ€" ers.) All of them were wonderful and worth studying. Also on display were items such as old wedding gowns, beautiful needlework and a 120 year-old afghan. Some of the halls provided lunch and dessert for a small price to raise money for their own worth- while endeavours. but the funds raised from the Sale of the pass~ port tickets will be donated to the Bnlce Peninsula Health Services Foundation. The members of the Women‘s Institutes and the Monday Matters and Wiarton Woolies rug hooking groups. demonstrated their remarkable talent for design‘ ingenuity. and organization as well as their spirit of com, munity The staff ol' Mothers' Fabric cer~ tulnly enjoyed mutt- lug all of the travelers who \’l.\llL‘tl the store The \'l'lt\\\' out». a sucr cuss :tnd rumour has ll that man) more items are available [U be displayed in future \‘ t'.
