/ Cl L- J“ U"; r, fq I] In 1912 the school received its first library. In the spring of the following year a drain was dug around the property to prevent road water from flooding the school grounds. In 1935 the outâ€"houses were replaced by chemical toilets in the basement; these were replaced by flush tOilets and running water in 1959. a new well having been drilled. In January 1938 the first piano was purchased for the school. ' Miss Cole organized the planting of the first school garden, however it was not a success because of lack of protection from animals and because of lack of watering during the summer vacation. About 1928 school gardens were replaced by home gardens with pupils exhibiting their produce at Fire] Schoo1 Falrs. Mr.James Caldwell and Mr John Weir acted as judges at the first school fair. On May 4, 1938 the school enetered the first musical festival for the district which was held in Wiarton. Mar had the honour of capturing the laurels in Rural School competition. Twenty schools were entered in this class; the prize was a beautiful silver cup. On September 17, 1959, first prize in square dancinc at the Wiartnn Fall Fair went to the school with Mrs.winnifred Martin as teacher. On May 8, 1940, a demonstration was given at the swhool by the Bruce Beautification Plan committee and many shrubs Were planted on the school grounds. In 1945 the Albemarle Township School Area came into effect under an elected board composed of William Rydall. Chairman. Alfred Ward, Bruce Morris. Stewart Couch. and Malcolm White. Trustees, with Herbert Bull appOinted Secretary-Treasurer In 1948 the school was wired for electricity. In 194‘ the furnace was removed from the basement and a Norge nii burning heater was installed in the classroom. Two years later the oil heater was replaced by a wood furnace in the basement whict was replaced by an oil furnace in the summer of 1962. In the fall of that year it was necessary to replace the electric hot plate With a larger electric stove to provide hot lunches for the increased enrolment. Due to the large enrolment a second teacher was added to the staff that September and both teachers worked in the one room.
