Glasgow Women's Institute Book 1 South Renfrew Institutes Enjoy Picnic at Castleford - 1947 On Wednesday, July 30 members of some 17 branches of the Women's Institutes of South Renfrew gathered together at Hubert Fergusons Beach on the Ottawa river, near Castleford, for a most successful and very entertaining picnic session with repre- sentatives coming from farâ€"off Combermere. Due to the particularly fine day, many were obliged to remain at home and make hay while the sun shone, but numbers in attendance were very encouraging with South Renfrew claiming the laurels for having the most present, having used a Colonial Bus to convey them thither. The morning hours were spent at the beach and enjoying a hearty picnic lunch with tea served by the members of Dewars W.I. A booth was in operation with ice cream and soft drinks under the capable aid of the North Horton W.|. with Mrs. Andrew Johnston as it's convener. Following the noon lunch the Sports Committee which included the Institutes of Loch- winnoch, Goshen and Glasgow put across a very successful programme under its effi- cient conveners, Mrs. R. M. McGregor and Mrs. J. McCallum. All ages got an opportu- nity to show how agile they were in the many races. For ail ages a wheelâ€"barrow, a rabbit hop, some shoe pitching and a tugâ€"ofâ€"war which was won by a group of girls. Many of the WI. members show rare sportsmanship as they participated In the many unique events with Mrs. Merrifield of Braeside and Mrs. J. Russett of Glasgow winning their running issue, while Dr. Brown gave Hubert Ferguson quite a run for first place. Mrs. John Henderson, president of South Renfrew W.I. called the group together with the singing of the Ode and a brief address of welcome. A group of girls from Lochwinâ€" noch including Lorraine Lavallee, Anita Storie and Edith Storie gave several musical numbers. Three girls, Edith Carmichael, Myrna Stewart and Lois Carswell from De- wars‘ W.I. presented a skit relevant to their recent Homemaking project. Mrs. Andrew Carswell of Glasgow was heard in an interesting ‘ and humorous reading entitled "Bargain Day”. The guest speaker was Dr. Brown of Renfrew who outlined I the reasons why the Renâ€" frew Co. Health Unit of which the Women‘s Institute have been giving much attention did not pass and that he was still interested because of our future generations and his hopes were very optimistic about its ultimate success when our Reeves will eventually foresee how much better prevention can be than cure and that lost health is very futile even with plenty of money. Other counties had made a success of the matter and that there were so many recommendations in its favour. Dr. Brown was introduced by Mrs. Henderson and thanked by Miss Kathryn Farmer of Combermere and Mrs. John E. Miller of Goshen. The remainder of the afternoon was spent In social concourse and at the beach. 50f105
