Glasgow Women's Institute Book 1 Glasgow WI Celebrate 6th Birthday - March 21 1951 The sixth birthday of Glasgow Women's Institute was celebrated in the usual delightful manner on Wednesday of last week, at the home of Mrs. M. Stewart, when the usual programs of educational nature were dispensed with in favor of an evening of pleasant social type. A group of new members of the Institute were in charge of the evening‘s program which, in honor of the patron saint of old Ireland, had a decidedly Irish flavor. A duet by Mrs. A. Carswell and Mrs. J. Russett was an enjoyable feature, as was a humorous recitation in the Irish brogue by Mrs. Carswell, and community singing of well known Irish songs brought everyone into the program. The same grand old songs of Erin, of which there seem to be scores, were chosen as the base for two cleverly arranged contests to try the wit and memories of the memâ€" bers and guests One prepared by Mrs. T. Storie, had to do with unscrambling of song titles, and re-arranging them In proper order. This was won by Mrs. J. Storie and Mrs. K. Gillan. The second, picture contest prepared by Mrs. A Somerville. was won by Mrs. George McNab, with Mrs. S. Anderson coming second. During a short business session tentative plans were made for catering to a banquet at the annual meeting of the Glasgow Coâ€"operative Association. A committee was apâ€" pointed, consisting of president, Mrs. G. Eady; secretary Mrs. J. A. Young; Mrs. K Gil- Ian and Mrs., N. Simpson to make final plans and with a committee from the Coopera- tive Association for arrangements. Since the date of the banquet has been set for the regular April meeting date of the Institute, it was decided to hold the April meeting one week late on April 25th. Delightful refreshments closed the evening, complete with the usual birthday cake beautifully made and decorated with six candles and the WI motto, "For Home and Country”, by Mrs. R. A. Stewart. The April meeting, weather and roads permitting, will be held at the home of Mrs. K. McIntyre, White Lake, when annual report would be heard and officers elected for the coming year. 11 of105
