Jan. 16/08 Walkerton Hawks Host All Stars and NHL Trophies by J. Brian Raper Above: Hawk President Ray Wri l The Walkerton Hawks hosted an All Star Game and NHL trophy display on Saturday, January at the alkerton Arena.xCongenial RayIWright, Dennis Fry, Dennis O' a an, Brian “Willie” Dales, Mike agner and other Hawk’s executives were on hand to meet and mingle with fans and “Joe Q. Public" as well. Man of the Hawk players, such as cott d Ryan Amyot also acted as aff le hosts on this momentous occa- sion. ’ Many area youngsters and their elders took time out to pose with five of theNHL trophies that were displayed in the Hawks Nest. ’ On this da the cm hies on disâ€" play were e Conn mythe . re resentative of the most valuab e Elayer in the playoffs; the Art 055 Troph . emblematic of the leagues lea ingkscorer each year; the Maurice ichard Trophy which is presented annually to the NHL player scoring the most goals in t e season: the china which goes to the goaltender with the best goals against average each season. Also on Hand was the Hart Memorial Tro by in- scribed annually to the eaoue’s MVP, Keeper of the trophies. Walt Neubrand, told your humble reporter that it is unusual to have this many of the Nl-lL‘s trophies gathered in one place. He said that normally only two or three tro- phies are brought to an event such as the one hosted by the Hawks Walt chatted about the trophies gesent this day. The Velma and an arc the oldest. The youngest are the Maurice Richard and Conn I _ _ ht and Vice President Dennis Fry With NHL trophies in the Hawks est at the Walkerton Arena Smythe. The Art Ross was do- nated in 1946. Elmer Iach of the Canadians won it that year. Gordie Howe owned it from 1950â€"1954, Sid the Kid won it last season. Prominent trophies not on hand on this da were the Norris and the Calder think they were preparing Calder name- lates for Jonathan Toews and atrick Kane who will share rookie honours this year. As an aside, I found out that Walt lives in the Steel City (Hamilton). You could have knocked me over with a feather when he told me he was an Argo fan. Before I knocked him over in the name of Hal Patterson, John Michaluk and Angie Mosea, he told me he was born and raised in Mississauga. That explained his warped rion'ties in cheerin as far as t e Canadian Foot all League is concerned. He is also a Leaf fan. Your humble scribbler an-ived at the Hawks Nest early in order to get a good and close up look at the five trophies. As man ttfyou know I am a bit of a hicago Blackhawk fan. I wanted to re- live my memories of the days when some of my favourite Hawks were awarded these pres- ti 'ous trophies. [Frifortunatelyn no Hawk player was ever the reci ient of the Conn Smythe Trop y. This was not the ease with the Art Ross. Bobby Hull and Stan Mikita con- trolled it in the 60’s.
