From the Historical Atlas of Middlesex Go. The first permanent settlement made in the county was in Delaware township near the Thames. Delaware village came into being, a little to the north of the present-millage was first settlemth of whiten‘en'that could? be tei‘hed a village.,'. The Longwood road prior to the war of 1812 was little more than an Indian trail. It Was improved at that time to allow the artillery and baggage wagons to be moved from place to placa. It extended to Burlington Heights under the direction of Commissioners and was known as the Commissioners road. When the first deed was registered in Middlesex (on land) it was called County of Suffolk. The first deed on land registered was from John Castles of Niagara(then Newark} to Joseph Kinsella, dated Apr. 12, 1800. The land conveyed was lot 11, in the 4th Concession of Delaware. Up to Oct. 1805 only 20 deeds had been registered on lands in this county, all of them in the township of Delaware. Compiled by V. W. Tilden
