DID YOU KNOW... in 1897. the year of Robert Simpson's death in Toronto, a vital organization began in the village of Stoney Creek, Ontario. A Stoney Creek fruit tanner, Erland Lee, secretary of the Salttleet Farmers‘ Institute. invited Mrs. Adelaide Hoodless, a proponent of domestic science. to address his group's “Ladies' Night." In her address. Mrs. Hoodless suggested that the women form an organization similar to the Farmers‘ Institute. 101 women and one manâ€" Mr. Lee â€" came to a meeting on February I9. l897, when Mrs. Hoodless addressed them. Mrs. E, D. Smith of Winona was the first president. and Mrs. Hoodless honorary president. The result was the Women's Institute, tirst in the world.
