Winning Poem Read at Castleford WI Meeting Doris Humphries hosted the November meeting of the Castleford Women’s Institute. Noreen McGregor, guest speaker, spoke on the centennial of Lochwinnoch Presbyterian Church. The first Presbyterian Church was in Castleford at the Bonnechere Point in 1848. The second was built in 1869 and the third in Lochwinnoch in 1894. One of the most exciting events during the past year was the discovery of the time capsule in the cornerstone of the church. Noreen read one of the handwritten records of the establishing of the church. Members of the church celebrated with teas, suppers and evenings of entertainment. On November 11, anniversary of the first service ever held in the church, a Kirking of the Tartan ceremony, was held in commemoration. The Institute members enjoyed reminiscing about past events and people as Noreen handed around pictures of the past and present. A poem, The Genealogist's 23rd Psalm, was read and the award winning entry. 'A Historical Event in Our Communitv' written by Doris Humphries The article told about the experiences of the children and their teacher in S.S.#3, Horton in 1893 when a cyclone ripped through the Castleford area. Doris Humphries' father-in- law, Lome Humphries, had been a pupil at the time and remembered the event vividly ail Ms life. The teacher, Miss Stirling, was so unnerved, she died a few months later.
