J / GROWTH OF THE COMMUNITY Admaston Township Fairs Again quoting from "The story of Renfrew" â€" In 1854 the Renfrew County Agricultural Society was organized in Renfrew. The first Renfrew Fair was in September 1855. The Society purchased improved varieties of seed grain for distrib- ution among its members. This practice was followed for several years. stumping machines and hay scales were bought for use of members at a nominal charge of course. Ploughing matches were a feature for several years and in addition to prizes awarded by the Society and local contributors, fine iron and steel plows and generous sums of money were presented by interested citizens of Ottawa, then By-Town. Branches of the Renfrew County Agricultural Society were later organized in the nearby townships of Horton and Anmaston when the Township Fairs came into being. The Township Hall was the site of the Fair for this township. The livestock sheds were in a field across the road from the Hall. Coops for poultry were arranged along the outside of the Hall. Inside was displayed women's Work, ranging through butter, cheese, soap, bread, etc. to quilts, mats and knitting. The fair was of one day's duration but was crowded with interesting exhibits and exciting events such as foot races, broadâ€"jumpino, tuaâ€"of-war, etc., and of course the youngster who had a nickel to purchase a treat of apples was very popular among his companions.
