A SHORT HISTORY OF THE ARNPRIOR HIGH SCHOOL By A.H.D. ROSS. M.A.M.F. ******$*$*************#****#***$******** 1865 - 1922 ************************************#*#* THE ARNPRIOR "GIMME SCHOOL" During the academic year 1861.6, Mr. Dugald c. McNab, Principal of the Arnprior Public School, privately coached a few of the older boys in Latin, and then advanced them far enough to read some of the easier chapters of Caesar. This generous action was greatly appreciated by the parents and led an agitation for the establishment of a "Grammar School", so that the advantages of a Secondary School education would be brought within the reach of all who desired it. 'llhe Chairman of the Board of Education at that time was the Reverend Peter Lindsay, B.A. first Minister of the St. Andrew's Presbyterian church, and the Secretary-Treasurer was MrJlugh (“Hamilton Hughie") MoLachlin, a nephew of the late Daniel McLachlin. It also appears that Mr. Joseph Jameison, a lawyer who afterwards practised in Almonte, represented North Lanark in the House of Commons for several years, and was then appointed County Judge at Guelph, was also a member, but no record has been found of the others. In all probability some of them were George Craig, John Halyey, John Tierney, Dennis Macnamara and the late Dr. Cranston.
