// -6- real objection to them at a11--but we are not so partial that we fail to see the dangerous, uncomfortable world they would make for their wife, if they shared her knowledge of household affairs. So we beg of you, Madam President, if you have any influence at all over our charming, but mistaken opponents, use it to keep our world for ourselves alone, and not expend any effort to make men learn domestic science. "Think of Pierre Curie, of Marconi, Alexander Graham Bell--they were eager students. Suppose during their course in household science, they had discovered in themselves an unsuspected talent for mixing varnish or making side curtains, or dressing meats. Where, oh where would the vast scientific discoveries have gone. Who knows, we would still be lost in the inconvenient times when ladies swooned by candlelight and died of unknown diseases, with no nurses, doctors, electricity, radio, telephone, aeroplane service or telegraph. Alas, what a topsy, turvy, poor place we would be living in. "No, Let men stay out of domestic science courses. Mrs. Jean Wilson, leader of the affirmative, in rebuttal, replied as follows:â€" "May I first tell you a little story. Quite a few years ago, we heard, at a Women's Institute Convention, from Dr. Patterson, Judge of the Domestic Relations Court in Toronto, of a case that bears out our story. It seemed that they were bothered every couple of days by a man and his wife. She said he is a good wage-earner. He said she is no good as a cook. They thought they should have a separation, the Court of Domestic Relations did not want to do that. They thought they would investigate the home life, and they asked the woman would she be willing to take a course in Domestic Science and everything that covers. The women said they knew by the state of the house that she was an excellent housekeeper as far as things being clean were concerned, but they happened to be people from a foreign country who were not used to the climate. They did not know the clothes part, the proper food to cook to keep a man properly nourished for his work. When they were offered this technical course, the man said, "Could I learn it too? I love my wife and in the country I come from, we always help my wife". They agreed to that and made arrangements for them to go to night classes. They did not hear anything from them for months and months. One day the man came back and he said he just came back to tell them, "We are happy, we are both happy. In the country I come from I helped her, and the only way I can show you people my appreciation is be being true Canadian Citizens and loyal subjects of the B’ritish Empire." While the Judges were deciding the result of the Debate, the President, Mrs. S. Wilson, addressed Lady Tweesmuir, as follows:- "Tour Excellency, the members of the Arnprior Branch, ask you to accept a gift as a slight souvenir of this visit to Arnprior, and a token of our respect and our good wishes." Mrs. Beckett presented the gift, a hand made bag, to Her Excellency. The Judges then reported their decision as to the result of the debate, was that it was a tie. Her Excellency, Lady Tweedsmuir, introduced by the President, Mrs. Wilson, addressed the gathering as follows:-
