FWIC Competitions Senator Cairine Wilson Competition The Senator Cairine Wilson Rose Bowl Trophy was presented to Loreen Amber of Ontario at the 1994 Federated Women's institutes of Canada (FWIC) Triennial Con- vention in Truro. Nova Scotiu. The Senator ï¬rst awarded it in 1957 t'orthe mostoutstand» trig project in citizenship. The winner of this FWIC competition in 1997 Will be awarded the Rose Bowl Trophy to retain during the next triennium. A mini- ature replica trophy will also be awarded to the wtnner for permanent possession. This competition is open to individual Women's Institute members. Each provine cial unit ot'the FWIC may submit one entry. Provincial units will be responsible for their own competitions and eliminations. The competition l'orthe 1994-97 triennium is an essay with photographs. The theme of thr: essay is “WI » A Fami ly Affair." referring to a family who has had more than one gen- eration as Women‘s Institute members. Lady Tweedsmuir, wife of Lord Tweedsmuir who was Governor General of Canada. donated three silver cups to the Federated Women‘s Institutes of Canada (FWIC) for competitions to be held each triennium. 10 Home & Country. Spring '95 The successful entrants will receive the prestigious Tweedsmuir Cups at the FWIC Convention in Hamilton. In pioneer days when gar- ments were out, the good pieces were saved and later hooked into nigs. These rugs were hooked on burlap and were used to cover and add warmth to bare wood floors. Many de- signs were created, with some patterns still being used today. Hooking bees also became popular as they provided an avenue for socia- bility.
