Cross Country Calendar South Lobo WI. Middlesex North The South Lobo Branch is proud of its memâ€" ber‘s attendance at W] conferences in the past several years: in I995. four members went to the Associated Country Women ofthe World (ACWW) Conference in Christchurch, New Zealand; in 1994, one went to the Federated Women's Institutes of Ontario (FWIO) Conâ€" ference in Orillia and five attended the Fed erated Women‘s Institutes ofCanada (FWIC) Convention in Truro. Nova Scotia; in 1992. one member went to the ACWW Conference in The Hague in the Netherlands and five participated in the FWIO Conference in Thunder Bay; two members attended the FWIC Convention in Victoria, BC. in 199]: and two registered for the FWIO Conference in Ottawa in 1990. Baltimore WI. Northumbetland West Members of this Branch placed a plaque to commemorate the planting of more than a quarter mile of spruce trees. The trees were planted at the Baltimore Recreation area in Canada‘s centennial year. when the late Willa Brisbin was President of the Branch. Her daughter Lorna Brisbin was present at the dedication ceremony. HanNood Wl. Northumberland West This Branch has kept busy at a number of projects in the last several months: hosting their First Annual District Picnic: installing two permanent benches in their local park; preparing and serving lunch at their com- munity's monthly euchre party; providing entertainment forthe residents ofthe Gold- en Plough Lodge; preparing Christmas baskets for local shutvins; sponsoring two CPR classes for the St. John's Ambulance Brigade; catering to the annual Fireman‘s Dinner; supplying home-made pies to the local Parks Board for auctioning at a local event; participating on the Greater Harwood Community Committee to plan for community improvements: and,teach« ing the youth how to cater. Chesley WI, Bruce East In 1927. the Chesley W1 erected a plaque in their local park honouring Canada’s Diamond Jubilee. Years later, the plaque disappeared when a hydro station was built on the site. When the original plaque was recently found. Chesley members decided to reinstate it in the park. but this time in a cairn. Local media and town dignitaries were impressed with the dedication cere- mony and the work of this group. 14 Home 8. Country. Winter '96 Dufterin North District Several members from this District were given pins for sixty or more years of service. District President Billie Power and PRO Gretta Brown proudly presented pins to long- time members Marjorie Coe. Meretta Rutledge, Martha Collins and Jean MacTaggart. Puslinch Wl. Wellington South Puslinch Branch members crafted a “Churn Dash" Quilt for the Centennial Prelude Quilt Show in Milton this past summer. They en- tered it in the local Aberfoyle Fall Fair and won first prize. Markstay Wl Sees a Need Members at the Markstay Women's Institute. Sudbury District. have been busy collecting used eye glasses. The glasses will be repaired and distributed in develop- ing countries. The Branch also sews and donates diapers and other collected baby clothes to the Texas Birthing Centre. Submmad by Nancy Fadchr, FRO. Maoists y WI, Sudbury District, Morson WI. Rainy Fliver Since the 19505. Morson residents wanted to establish a local cemetery. They were conâ€" cemed because residents who passed away were buried in othercommunities. Finally. in the late 1980s, Morson WI members were appointed to investigate sites. Several sites were considered but not acceptable. Eventu- ally. the WI persistence paid off when an appropriate piece of land was graciously doâ€" nated by Vernon and Maria Stintzi. Mr. Stin- tzi planted spruce trees on three borders, the WI erected a fence on the fourth side and shared the cost of a tool shed with the local Council. benches were installed and lilac bushes and ornamental trees were planted - the cemetery was a reality. Lastly. a local stone was erected and engraved to acknoW» ledge the initiative of the Morson W1 and the donors of the land. Washago WI. Simcoe East Washago Women's Institute received first prize for their float entered in the Washago Canada Day Parade. Their theme was “Then and Now;" their float depicted the beginning of the WI organization with the Adelaid Hoodless Home and the global extent of WI distribution today with several members dressed in various national costumes. After the parade, Washago members served four hundred pieces of birthday cake to dignitar- ies and villagers. Woodlord Wl, Grey North This Branch invited two neighbouring Branches to a meeting about women‘s health issues. A Registered Nurse, Mrs. G. Schwellinger. spoke to the group about com- mon cancers found in women. how they are treated and how to prevent them. She empha- sized doing regular selfâ€"breast examinations. getting pap smears once a year, eating a diet high in fibre and low in fat, avoiding second- hand cigarette smoke and maintaining a posi- ti ve attitude. Moyle Wl. Brant North Topics of discussion at Branch meetings and places visited in 1995 included: the origin of the Victorian Order of Nurses (VON) and its role today; CAERAN â€" environmentally re- sponsible and natural products; local Tweedsmuir Histories since 1960; the impor- tance of the recycling program and the use of blue boxes; a picnic at the Adelaide Hume, Hoodless Home; entertaining residents 0 Telfer Place in Paris: and. a trip to a local gravel company.
