ACWW - “Working with Women Worldwide” By Peggy Knapp W arjorie Carson. a volunteer at Brookville Public School has been teaching twenty students (both girls and boys) to knit. The Prime Minister has expressed concern that unless someone teaches the old handicrafts, we were in danger of losing them. The Brookville experience is part of a program through which 4.000 seniors and adults have been teaching more than 13.000 students across Canada to knit, Marjorie in offering her services to Brookville teacher, Betsie Wynen. has gathered the children together during their noon lunch breaks to learn this basic handicraft. She felt that they not only needed to learn to knit, but they needed to knit something useful and they needed to have a goal. Through Jane Baynton of Nassagaweya WI in the Halton District. Marjorie learned of the Squares for Zambia Project. This was just the right thing! So, as the ACWW Area President for Canada, I went with Jane to Brookville School to accept almost 200 perfectly knit 4" squares. which the Nassagaweya Branch will send to Zambia. The students By Lorna McGrath Membership Organizer is a Women's Institute member chosen at Area Con- vention to address membership issues. Each Organizer receives an invitation to attend a Mem- bership Organizer Workshop in the late fall. They meet with their counterparts from the other Areas to receive training. exchange ideas. discuss challenges and gain confidence. As Membership Coordinator. I assist with training. encouraging and supporting me Area Organizers. We are a team. This year. I will welcome representatives from the Junior Women’s Institutes to the fall workshop. The mandate of the Membership Organizer is to attract new members. to organize new Branches and to encourage present members. As individual members in your Area. you can help the Membership Organizer. Ask her to speak to your Branch. She can explain the strengths of the Women’s Institutes. Let her know where there might be some interest in forming a new group. A Membership Organizer can learn from you, as much as you can learn from her. You might wish to attend the Area Membership Workshop that she organizes. You could be part of the local team! I like the idea of teams. A team suggests that each person is equally important in making the decisions and in sharing the work. A team helps to increase enthusiasm and to decrease the load that falls on the shoulders of those who lead. Develop your strengths and use them for the betterment of the Women‘s Institute organization. Help strengthen all levels of the Women’s Institute. Together, we will tackle the challenge of aking our communities safer and healthier than ever before.
