I am writing to let you know that l have finished my degree requirements. I defended my thesis in October, presented the results at the annual scientific conference of the Canadian Association on Gerontology and handed in the final draft at the end of the fall semester. I will convocatc on June 12 and am now applying for the second half of the scholarship to assist me in my re- search career. Although there is a scarcity of full-time employment, there are many opportunities which will help mc to establish my career as a consultant in research. evaluation and gerontology. Perplexing Pairs: Simply Synonymous? There are so many options for expressing ourselves in English, and there is such an abundant menu of words to choose from, that choosing the right word can be tricky. A word that we think is an apt synonym simply may not be appropriate. Some pairs of words cause confusion - words that are often considered synonyms but that have slightly different connotaâ€" tions; words that sound synonymous but are not; and even words that are interâ€" changeable.
