Visitors from the lost villages uprooted by the St. Lawrence Seaway Project forty years ago came to view Tweedsmuir Histories and scrapbooks and meet old friends and neighbours. Some 6,500 people from seven communities between Cornwall and Iroquois had to move and start all over again. These became known as the Lost Villages; some were reborn in new lo- cales, others disappeared forever. I _I_ V ‘ liedelon Wl, l J This Branch participated in a Naturalizaâ€" tion Project at the Senior Public School, They planted a Locust tree with a plaque at its base crediting the Nobleton WI.Two combined bake and garage sales raised $800 which was used for this project. The Branch also helped update a history of their community and hope to sell l000 copies. As well, members donated a copy ofFar Home and Country to the Nobleton Public Library. She has been President at all levels â€" Branch, District, Area, pro- vincial and national. and was a recipient ofthe Order ofOntario. Through her spe- cial efforts. Eastern Area has produced two volumes of a best seller - Silver Thoughts,Golden Words and A Nickel's Worth of Stories. Ethel has been an active member of the WI since 1936. serving in vari- ous positions at Branch. District, Area and as a Provincial Board Director. She has helped various community organizations, including 4-H, the Renfrew Fairand Horticulture groups and the Horton Hall and Sportsplex. Gurtie was recognized for her many hours of volunteer serv- ice to the women's Institute and the local nursing home In Gore Bay.
