After the Ice Storm... Bill Sluiman, a Red Cross Representative from Eganvilie, accepts Silver Thoughts, Golden Words and A Nickel's Worth of Stories, from Mae Craig, President of Eastern Area Women's Institutes. Sluirnan presented a number of health and safety lips as part ofEasten-i Area’s Emergency Plan Workshops. Workshops were held in Feb~ ruary for Subdivisions 1 and 2 and in April for Subdivision 3t Eastern Area continues to work on their Emergency Plan and hope to have a final document some time this fall. Monetary donations made to the Ontario Rural Relief Fund and the United Way amounted to more than $15,000. Make May Membership Month Challenge Report Way to Go Hamilton Area! Hamilton Area PRO Helen Young reports six new members as a result of the Make May Membership Month recruitment campaign by some of the Branches in her Area. She also notes several creative methods of recruitment, including a "Wanted by the FWIO" poster, meeting invitations prepared by computer technology and 3 "Me and My Friend“ Tea. Those Branches that participated distributed 44 invitations during their walks which totalled 10.018 kilometres. Congratulations! Members across Ontario are challenged to plan a recruitment campaign in their Branches to prepare for the 1999 "Make May Membership Month.” Be original in your plans, or contact the Membership Organizers and Public Relations Officers in your Districts, or the provincial Mem- bership Coordinator and PRO for ideas With a full year to prepare a recruitment strategy, next year’s total kilometres walked. invitations extended and invitations accepted, with the resulting total of new members, could be more than 14 times the numbers reponed by the Hamilton Area. Are you ready to meet the challenge? Stay Alert! Don’t Get Hurt! The Safety Activity Day held by the Lennax E: Addington District WI was a great success. Nearly 100 children participated in the program held at the Napanoe District Secondary School. To kick off the activities, 15 children sang "Stay Alert! Don't Get Hum," written for the occasion with the help of David Archibald, a popular local songwriter and entertainer. Participant went In groups through eight different Sta tions. The hands-on demonstrations were presented by area police, hospital, ambulance and fire personnel. A local health unit, veterinary clinic. humane society, farm safety, gymnastic and karate club organized interactive stations. A champion of agri- culture and rural affairs. she has had a profound influence on the lives of many people. Peggy has been a dedicated member of WI since 1950, serving with distinction in many offices at the Branch, District and Area levels. She was Provincial President of the FWIO from 1989 to 1991. and in 1992 was elected Canada Area President for the Associated Coun- try Women of the World (ACWW). an international organization active in 65 countries. Active in her local community. Peggy acted as President of the Home and School Association and as a Trustee of her local school board. She has served on the Advisory Boards of the Ontario Ag» ricultural College. the Ontario Veterinary College. the Ontario Agricul- tural Museum and on the Education Advisory Board for the Grand River Conservation Authority. Peggy is currently President of the Ca- nadian Agricultural Hall of Fame and a member of the Executive and Agricul- ture Administration Committees of the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. Her oganization and communication skills have served her well as a leader. Peggy‘s influence will be felt in this country and abroad for many years to come.
