Sewing into Unfamiliar Territory By Leona Stubbings I was raised on a farm near Markdaie. After completing school I went to Brampton and worked for the County of Peel and in the Personnel Office at American Motors. In 196l I married Cliff, a Bell Canada Technician. We have two children. both in the medical profession, and three grandchilâ€" dren. We moved back to the farm in 1966, where we still live. During my 33 years that I have been a WI member, I have had the privilege of being President of the Zion Branch and Grey Centre District, Resolutions Convener in Grey~Bruce Area and a Board Director for FWIO. Becoming a Women's Institute member changed my place in the community in an interesting way, Because of my involvement in the community through the WI, I was ap- proached to seek a position on Council in 1982. And I became the first woman elected to our local Township Council. I served as a Councillor for six years and Deputy Reeve for nine years. retiring in 1997. Cliff had retired in 199l from Bell Canada. We purchased a quilting machine from A-l Quilting in the United States in |992. This was unfamiliar territory for both of us, as well as most quilt makers and quilters in Grey County. That fall. we opened a hobby business - Cliffâ€"Lea Quilting - offering cus- tom machine quilting to the area. Cliff does the quilting, operating the machine. And I handle the advertising and orders. We have quilted for people from all over Ontario, including Thunder Bay. Toronto. Barrie and our surrounding counties. Many WI Branches and other Organizations have visited our business for demonstrations. However, it is just a hobby - we are snowbirds three months of the year and enjoy spending time at our cottage and fishing for salmon. Leona Stubbings is a member of the Zion WI, Grey Centre. I2 Home In Country, Summer I999 All Over the Map The Kent District Women's Institutes have prepared a small flyer to assist.: them in membership recruitment. The flyer is 5 1/4 wide x 8 1/2 high. A map is the primary feature of the flyer. The map outlines township boundaries and depicts major towns, and most importantly it names and pinpoints all the Branches in the District. As well, a Branch contact and phone number is listed, along with the District President and Secretary. Women interested in joining can easily locate the nearest Branch, and then call the contact person. The brochure encourages women toioin the WI and help answertheir communities needs. The WI, it states, is their chance to learn and make a difference! Weil done Kent District! Let us know about your innovative membership recruitment ideas.
