FWIC Update By Donna Russett The FWIC Annual Board Meeting was held in Moncton. New Brunswick, from July 9 to l2. The budget for the upcoming year was reviewed. reports were given and other items of business addressed. The literacy Project The Literacy Workshop informing us about the second phase. of helping people cope with eve- ryday tasks. was one of the main items on the agenda. A similar workshop will be held for FWIO Provincial Advisory Councillors follow- ing the Annual Meeting in November. Kits, including a second video, will be going out to the Branches across Canada. Using the kits. the Branches are encouraged to plan a meet ing for the coming year. We ask that you respond with enthusiasm. We stress that the idea is not to tutor but rather to help on a practical level. Dorothy Silver the woman on the first video was the luncheon Speaker and gave amoving first person account ofthe everyday difficulties expe- rienced by an adult with low literacy skills. LINKS - Linking Institutes and Neighbours with Knowledge and Skills - was chosen as the project name with a butterfly as the symbol. The Novisi Weaning Industry Project A big thank you to all who have supported this international project. The goal of£l776 has been surpassed. The excess is being held awaiting information on whether there is to be a second phase to the project. If not. we will be seeking permission to reallocate the surplus to another project. FWIC 2000 - "Up, Up and Away - Shaping Our Dreams” Plans are progressing well for the FWIC Con- vention to be held in Brandon. Manitoba. from June 6 to ID. 2000. There will be an early bird registration fee of $299 up until January 3]. 2000. After that. the fee will be $350. Final cut off date is May 1. 2000. I became a teacher and taught for several years. During this time, I met my husband to be, who was from a family farm in the Langton area. We married in 1940. After the war, William and Ifarmed with his brother near Langton. There we had two sons. William and James. In 1949, I joined the Langton WI and was President from 1959 to 1962. My husband represented our area as a Mem- ber of Parliament. I was busy, but did enjoy my monthly WI meeting and get ting involved in the local fairs. I love art and contests, so I was thrilled to have my design chosen for the centennial plate. The Langton Branch caters a monthly meal for the Langton Lions Club. The Langton WI seem to have a good reputa- tion for catering food! The Women's Institute has done a tre- mendousjob all around the world. And | feel humbled and honoured to have my brief profile printed in our provincial newsletter Home & Country.
