Cross Country Calendar Bridgeport Wl, Waterloo Rick Magier. formerly with Kaufman Footwear in Waterloo. spoke to the Bridgeport Women‘s Institute about “Outdoor Footwear." Magier brought numerous samples to display and outlined the various stages of boot making. The Kaufman business went into receivership in l999 and the Sorel name was sold to a company in Columbia. Ohio. The Bridgeport WI also enjoyed another presentation given by Bioarcheologist Margaret McCuLcheon-Judd. A recent Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Alberta. Judd recounted a mummy's journey from ancient Egypt to Victorian England. and finally to the University of Alberta in Edmonton. Wellmnn’s WI, Hastings North Members of thc Wellman‘s Women's Institute held .1 Bone China Tea with more than 50 members in attendance. Tom and Barb McAllister. volunteers with the Osteoporosis Society. spoke to the group about the disease. The fine bone china on display at the event was symbolic of how porous and brittle our bones can become with osteoporosis. Branch President Donna Russett also gave a presentation on “Tea Trivia." Peterborough District Wl This District decorated a twoâ€"foot tree for the Festival ofTrees in Peterborough. The Festival celebrated its to†anniversary and has raised over 1.9 million dollars for health care in Peterborough. Each WI Branch in the District contributed an edible treat to go with the tree. The beautifully adorned tree was ruffled. The District felt that it was great public relations for the WI. while at the same time contributing to health care in the area. Rutherglen WI, Nipissing Rutlicrglen Women's Institute member Velda Thompson was the recipient of the 90'n Anniversary Educational Award for the Northern Region. Velda will use the award to further her education in ear re- tlcxology. id tiom l'. Country, Spring 2013! Orkney Wl, Wentworlh This Branch is proud of member Anna Jones who compiled a history ofCopetown entitled Glorious Capetown, I795 â€" 2000 as her own personal millennium project. Proceeds from the book are helping sup- port a new children's playground in the community. Donations have also been made to local Women's Institutes, schools. other community grunps and libraries. Bentputh Wl, Lumbtort South Bentpath member Ethel Turner donated a plaque that marks the spot where the Calvin Church and Bentpath Women's Institute Hall once stood. Faye Valliant and Norma Bennett. Northumherlond West District WI This District sponsored a Fall Bazaar and Craft Sale with the proceeds going to build- Ing the new hospital In Cobourg. That same day the District presented Christina Webb from ï¬ascnealh with the Olive Davlney Scholarship. Norlhumberland District also hosted a Fall Rally In Aiynwich. Skits, read- Ings and jokes made fora relaxing afternoon. Provincial Advisory Councillor Daraihy Harndan attended the event and was caught on camera during a more serious moment! With the pro- ceeds made at their Annual Lawn Sale, they purchased two park benches, one for use at a local cemetery and the other at Erie Beach. in addition, they sat up a display and sold Items at Fildgeway Fast for two days. presented two scholarships to local high school students and donated books and mit- tens to the local Literacy Foundation.
