Her address opened with a quote from Shakespeare â€" "There is a title in the affairs of men when taken at the full..." She then went on to describe the treacherous waters off Maui where one must ride the wave at the right lime. Peggy trusts that the FWIO have caught the wave and will ride it into the future. Other highlights of the evening included: a slide presentation by Donna Russett of the anniversary celebrations held last summer be- Resolutions Approved at 1990 Annual Board Meeting Twelve resolutions were approved by the Federated Women‘s Institutes of Ontario at their annual meeting in November. They included: I. requesting the Ministry of the En- vironment to pass legislation regulating manufacturers and dis- tributors to pay a refund for the return of soft drink andjuice bottles and cans; 2. petitioning the Attorney General of Ontario to increase stafï¬ng and funding to the Support and Custody Enforcement Ofï¬ces across the province so that they may ade- quately carry out their mandates; 3. appealing to the Ministry of Health and the Ontario Ministry of Com- munity and Social Services to maintain adequate support for Homemakers Services; 4. petitioning the Minister of Health and Welfare Canada to make fair and reasonable compensation to Thalidomide victims; 5. persuading the Ministry of the En- vironment to pass legislation to ban the launching of balloons into the atmosphere; 6. urging the Ministry ofthe Environ- ment to change Regulation 309, 1:27. ofthe Environmental Protec- tion Act to prohibit the disposal of all hazardous wastes in sanitary landï¬ll sites; 7. requesting the Ministry of the En- vironment to require that all sanitary landï¬ll operators provide facilities for the collection of household. commercial and in- dustrial hazardous waste. and pro» vide for transportation of such material to hazardous waste treat- ment facilities: 8. pressuring the Government of Canada to enact legislation to the effect that all frozen foods carry a clear consumer "best before" date; 9. urging all members at branch. dis- trict, area and provincial levels to refrain from using “plastic foam" products. such as disposable cups. trays and egg canons; IO. pressuring Consumer and Cor- porate Affairs to reinstate the words "treated by irradiation" on the Radura Symbol. so consumers will be able to identify irradiated foods: 1 I. requesting the Solicitor General. the Minister of Health. the Minister of Senior Citizen‘s Affairs and the Minister for Women's Issues to in- troduce a bill providing for the legal enforcement ofa Living Will; and, 12. appealing to the Ministry of the Environment to prohibit the use of the Marmoraton mine pit and sur- rounding area as a landï¬ll site. tween the National Federation of Women's Institutes in England and Wales and the FWIO members; a display by Jane Croft of gifts and souvenirs from this trip; and‘ another presentation of slides by Margaret Munro of her exchange visit to Nebraska last summer, In the days to follow. several new members were elected to the Execu» tive and Board of Directors.
