News of Huggy, a large Care Bear type of stuffed animal, came to our attention via the September 1985 issue of the Home & Country newsâ€" letter published by the New Bruns- wick Women’s Institutes. A report in the publication, pre- pared by Isabel Coburn. explained that Huggy had paid a visit to the NBWI banquet in May, hugging many of those in attendance! Huggy is, in fact, a new character who will be travelling widely in his fight to eliminate drug and alcohol abuse â€" especially among children. The NBWI was told there are mil- lions of drug addicts. many of whom are as young as six or seven. The Nashwaaksis Lions asked: “How can we reach out to the young?" The anwser: Huggy. Using the motto “Hugs â€" Not Drugs”, the Lions bring Huggy to schools and youth clubs, leaving behind pins as reminders of the dis- cussions that took place during Hug~ gy's visit.
