Support for family violence victims The Ontario Government innottnced new initiatives to support he victims of family violence in \lovember and named Jill Logan to read the program. When announcing the program, Deputy Premier Robert Welch ex- plained the initiatives will include atrategies to increase public ‘zwareness through information and sublic forums; the ongoing research and coalition of data on community based justice projects; and the provi- slot] of ad hoc, crisis ï¬nancial aid for existing transition shelters. WHEREAS one in ten Canadian women are battered by the men they are married to or live common-law with; and two thirds of all divorce applications art: filed by women; more than onc- quartcr of these divorces arc rc- quested on grounds including physical cruelty; and WHEREAS eight of ten women scoli- ing shelter in a Canadian Transition House had been beaten while they were pregnant; and one out of three residents in homes for battered women had been beaten weekly or daily; and WHEREAS 45% of the Canadian population lives in an area without the service of a shelter and beaten women in thesi- areas have nowhere to seek refuge; THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Federated Women's lusti- tulcs of Ontario urge the Govern- ment of Ontario to take steps [0 see that funding is made available for the provision and upkccp of shelters for battered women. 2]
