HAZEL STILES WINNER At the FWiC Annual Board Meeting Mrs, M, Anderson, Convener of Education and Cultural Activi- ties. announced that the 2nd Annual Hazel Stiles Scholarship had been awarded to Mrs. Herbert Ma- luske, Chesley. Past President of FWIO. This Scholar- ship of $500 is to be awarded annually to an active W. |. Member to further her education in areas related to ._-ultural activities to beneï¬t both self and community. In addition to attending Night School classes on :y-ping, Mrs. Maluske has attended special ESOL Train- ng Courses (English for Speakers of Other Languages) n Kitchener and Chesley. This course is based on the .aubach method which Mrs. Maluske is using to teach mguage and Canadian culture to the boat people ._-ttled in Chesley. After briefly reviewing the history of the Women‘s stitute. referring to Adelaide Hoodless and Erland we. he pointed out the many accomplishments achieved members, not only in Canada but worldwide. Mr. McNeil referred to the responsibilities women we assumed on farms and in rural communities over i-c years as homemakers. mothers and as partners. nntributing toward the success of the family farm. For "unerations women on farms have earned a degree of 'villlality which their city sisters have not had. Referring to the Province of Ontario. Mr. McNeil did people are inclined to think of this Province as a strong industrial base. as a centre of business and commerce. Whereas we take second place to no province in Agriculture and the production of quality foods. Ontario produces 30 percent of Canada's Agricultural and Food products and 56 percent of all food processed in Canada. Farm cash sales amount to more than four billion dollars a year. Only 5% of Ontario's population are farmers yet 20% of the population depend on Agriculture for their livelihood and one person in ï¬ve works at a job connected with the food industry. The Foodland Ontario program launched in 1977 is a consumer oriented program with the objective of in- creasing thc consumption of Ontarioâ€"produced Agricul- lural products among its citizens. The impact of “Food- land“ on consumer attitudes and purchasing has been significant. Research shows one in two people are becoming aware of the high quality of Ontario Foods.
