They pro- « ided wheel chairs and a rocker for Wentworth Lodge. and during centennial year. completely equipped a new kitchen. WALSINGHAM WI‘s ON-GOING PROJECT 111 I967 the lZ3â€"year»old South Walsingham Township Hall was destined to be either razcd or deâ€" moted to a storage shed. That was until Walsingham Wl‘s adopted the restoration as a Centennial project. The Women‘s Institute project has come a long way in the last 10 years. but not without problems. The first hurdle to overcome was when Haldimand- Norfolk Health Unit decided to lock it up because of Improper sanitation facilities. the heating system and facilities for serving food. The first thing was to modernize the kitchen and update the sewage system. The old wood stove was given to the Backus Museum and replaced by an oil fumace. Mrs. Sharon Hamm President says the next step is to restore the outside to the 1863 era when it was first used as a Council Chamber. It will be painted white and landscaped in the 1800‘s design. Inside. it's not as easy. paint is hard to strip so it might be repainted according to Mrs. Hamm. however they will definitely preserve the original benches and stage. The building now serves as a Community Hall with many and varied activities. the only stipulation “no liquor“. So far the cost is about $9000.00. plus it great deal of hard work and dedication by 25 WI members. They raise their money through bake sales. pancake break- fasts. draws and annual fireworks display. Recently the Branch hired a janitor this makes it easier when renting for business meetings and tobacco elections, Walsingham WI have almost come back full circle. Mrs. Hamm says “now we‘re renting the hall to the Haidimand-Norfolk Health Unit to run their spring rabies clinicâ€"the very building they almost con» demned.“ Havelock WI Mrs. Olive Scott. Branch member gives talk to the Rotary Club on the history and achievements of the Havclock WI.
