FWIC FWIC will study the green paper. on Food Strategy for Canada. tabled in the House of Commons last June. Mr. G. Lussier, Deputy Minister ongricul- ture representing the Hon. Eugene Whelan presented FWlC‘with a Sl0.000.00 cheque. a grant the organiza- tion has received annually for some years. Mr. Lussier, spoke about the complexities of agri. culture and the challenge it presents in the production of food. Members should be gathering information and submitting ideas. it is the only way the voice of Women’s Institute will have an impact on the green mt er. I PDuring the business meeting, held at Carlton Uni- tersity, two policy statements came out of the meetâ€" mg: l. The F WIC has, since its beginning. recognized the importance and value of the strong family unit. and of the contribution a strong, unified family structure makes to its members, to the community and to the nation. As an organization, a top priority must be to encourage and preserve the strengthening of the [one ilv unit. “A nation can not rise above the level ofits homes. ” therefore, we women must work and study together to raise our homes to the highest possible level. Suggested Activities: Encourage each Branch to unâ€" dertake at least one activity that includes the whole family. 3. Statement on National Unity Since national unity is one of the most pressing issues facing Canadians today, F W1C reafiirms our belief in a United Canada and strongly urges our fellow Cana- dians to do everything in their power to appreciate our diverse cultures and to keep our nation as one. Suggested Activities: Promote a national study by our members of the Constitution (B.N.A.) with aims or recommendations for changes in the Act to proâ€" mote or improve better understanding and equal~ ization between all Canadians, and Study of our Ca» nadian History in our Branches and encourage the study in the schools. National Life Membership Mrs. John Charlton, Secretary of the Adelaide Hoodless Homestead Committee was honoured with a life membership by the Federated Women‘s institute of Canada during the June 1977 Board Meeting. The local Committee (appointed in 1959). Mrs. Harry Nixon. Mrs. Ewart Hunt and Mrs. Charlton have served together since the beginning and all are to be commended for their efforts. This committee has worked with the National and FWlO Presidents and Director of Home Economics Branch of Ontario in their decision making but it really was this group of three Who carried the day to day work load. Mrs. Charlton was appointed Secretary in 1960 and since has been responsible for the lovely history and scrap book depicting all events at the Homestead. Authorization has been granted by FWIC Board to have this book microfilmed. With all of her outside interests and activities she has been a faithful and active member of the Blue Lake and Auburn Branch serving In many capacities, having been honoured with a life membership some years ago. “Nellie” has contributed time and talent to all levels of the WI work. having attended ACWW Conferences in Toronto. Oslo. Lansing and Perth. in 1953 she was appointed an ofiicial delegate represent- ing Rhodesia at the Conference in Toronto, Mrs. Charlton's community and church interests have demanded much of her time. She holds a 25 year service pin from the Paris Agricultural Society. served on the Women's Advisory Committee, Ministry of in- dustry and Tourism as well as appointed to the first Agricultural Advisory Board, Ontario Agriculture Mu- seum. Milton. A reappointment for a second three year term has just been approved. A well deserved life membership to a very deserv- ing memberâ€"NELLIE CHARLTON.
