PROGRESS PLUS Peggy Vogt~â€"PRO The Wainï¬eet Junior Women‘s Institute was just an idea in June 1973 and by September had its charter meeting with seven members present. Our election of' oflicers resulted in everyone holding a position. Our programmes have been both educational and enjoyable. Some of the highlights were speakers from Alcoholism and Drug addiction; RightAto-Life (anti» abortion); Poise and Personality; Rape Crisis Inter» vention; Skin Care; and a local doctor speaking on Hyperactive Children. Demonstrations have been given on cake decorating; Christmas crafts: macrame pot hangers; metric system. and yoga. We have viewed slides on different countries and in 1976 toured McMaster Medical Centre. 1975 was devoted to mak- ing craft items in order to take part in the Wainï¬eet Fall Fair. We have enjoyed such social functions as summer bar-b-cues. Christmas dinners and bowling. We now ï¬nd that membership greatly increases by inviting the public to one or two meetings a year with speakers on topics of low] interest. Our fund raising projects have included a rummage sale; booth at our Fall Fair; at “Luncheon is served"; coffee spoon sales; and bake sales, Through this we have made donations to the lo» cal library for a projector and shelving; the Mentally Retarded; the Erland Lee Home and to one needy family at Christmas time. Since our beginning we have collected Dominion Store Cash Register tapes to be exchanged for some- thing needed by our local hospital. We ï¬nally have enough tapes and will soon be placing a large-laced clock in the Extended Care Unit of the hospital. We have also planned a bus trip to Andres Wines in June. Although any number of these projects could have been undertaken by any organization. ifwe were not a J.W.I.. we would not have reaped the beneï¬ts of all the Home Economics sponsored programmes. Particiâ€" pation has made better people of all our members, Membership is now 2272: long way from our char- ter membership in 1973 and a terriï¬c bunch of girls.
