Scholarships Provided Through F.W.I.O. ENTRANCE AWARDS ‘ _ In 1945 a Scholarship Fund was established in rec- ognition of those women who pioneered Womens Inâ€" stitutes in Ontario. This was to be known as the ‘ Ade- laide Hoodless Memorial Fund." _ The project was suggested by Miss M. Viola Pow- ell. member of the staff of the Women‘s Institute Branch. Department of Agriculture. and a former sec‘ retary ofthe Federated Women’s Institutes of Ontario. as a 50th Anniversary project. The Entrance Award recipients would be students taking the Degree Course at Macdonald Institute. Guelph. The suggested project was two sided. the money collected was to be used for a scholarship fund and to pay the expenses of the pageant “Let There Be Light." at the 50th anniversary celebrations at Guelph. All the money collected went into the Scholarship Fund be- cause the Department of Agriculture. paid for the pag- eant expenses including the filming. $19,000.00 Donated Under the direction of the Provincial Board at the 1947 annual meeting. 519000.00 was presented to the Ontario Agricultural College for scholarships to Home Economics students. This sum to be invested and the interest from the bonds. to provide scholarships. The terms of reference were: (I) regional. as estab- lished by the F.W.I.O. (2) $100.00 each (3) five En- trance Award Scholarships (4) preference to the daughters of W.l. members (5) Committee. In I948. the first two students to receive Entrance Awards were Agnes (Turnbull) King and Jean Thompson. By the 1950’s the Entrance Award fund had a con- siderable amount of accrued interest. At the 1954 F.W.I.0. Board meeting, permission was given to grant a scholarship of $950.00 to a Jamaican girl for further study for two years. The first year $500.00 was paid. she failed her year. this ended the project. 65th Anniversary of FWIO In 1962. sixteen special Awards of $100.00 each were presented to Guelph students entering Macdon- ald. The accumulated interest from the original $19,000.00 made this possible. On the 70th Anniversary in 1967. the accrued in- terest made it possible to present fifteen Awards at $150.00 each. In 1968, the regular Entrance Awards were in creased to six at $100.00 each â€" four regional and two at large. 1972. the regular six established Awards were pre- sented in addition to twenty-five special Awards hon- curing the 75th Anniversary of the founding of Women‘s Institutes in Ontario.
