THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Federated Women’s Institutes of Ontario do everything possible individually and collectiveâ€" 1y to discourage the manufacture of such re- ceptacles and that they ask the Government of Ontario to use its influence to discourage the manufacture and use of both these bottles and cans. North Central Area WHEREAS it is a known fact that the fog conditions on Highway 17 West from Copper Cliff to the Kelly Lake Road west turnoff is caused by the creek which runs under the highway in this vicinity; WHEREAS the Department of Highways seems reluctant to pinpoint who is to blame for these fog conditions; THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Federated Women‘s Institutes of Ontario re- quest that the Department of Highways have the creek covered and if necessary assess the c05t thereof to those responsible for the creek, thereby putting an end to this unnecessary cause of many accidents and fatalities on this stretch of highway. Northwestern Area WHEREAS television reception in rural areas of Kenora District is presently limited to one channel; AND WHEREAS there is a wide diversity of interest among viewers, and some dissatisâ€" faction over programmes currently shown: AND WHEREAS news broadcasters pro- vide a great deal of information about the Province of Manitoba and very little about Ontario; THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Federated Women‘s Institutes of Ontario urge the Canadian Telecommunications Committee to implement plans for the installation of addiâ€" tional private TV channels in North-Western Ontario and to improve the quality of the pres- ent programmes offered by C.B.C, including news of Northâ€"Western Ontario originating from Thunder Bay or another Northâ€"Western Community. WHEREAS more and more people are trav- elling and are using restaurants and hotels for meals; THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Federated Women’s Institutes of Ontario re- quest the Ontario Department of Health and the Ontario Restaurant Association to see that the regulations regarding those preparing and serving food be more strictly enforced. SUMMER 1971 Simcoe Area WHEREAS there is too much destruction of wild life by thoughtless peeple; AND WHEREAS too little thought is given to the useless suffering of living creatures; THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Federated Women's Institutes of Ontario reâ€" quest the Department of Games and Fisheries that stricter enforcement of the law be imâ€" posed on such acts of cruelty and heavy fines be enacted Southwestern Area WHEREAS at the present time taxes for ed- ucation are so very high that the tax burden is too great for farmers; AND WHEREAS the education tax is very unfair when farmers are taxed on all their land assessment while lot owners pay taxes on much smaller portions of property; AND WHEREAS the smaller lot property owner receives the same benefit and pays less; THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Federated Women's Institutes of Ontario re- quest the Government authorities to provide legislation for a fairer proportion in taxes for educational purposes. WHEREAS the American West and South- west is in need of water; AND WHEREAS Canada at present, has a good supply of water in the Northwest; AND WHEREAS the United States Gov- ernment has approached the Canadian Govâ€" ernment to buy water; THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Federated Women‘s Institutes of Ontario peti- tion (urge) the Canadian Government to re- frain from selling Canada’s water rights. WHEREAS the cost of living has constantly increased for the past eighteen years, while basic exemption for income tax has remained the same for the above period of years; AND WHEREAS the Income Tax of Cana- da, as far as exemptions are concerned does not seem to adhere to these factors; AND WHEREAS it is the people in the low income brackets who are most severely affect- ed by such legislation; THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that we strongly request the Federal Government to in~ crease the basic exemption under The Income Tax Act from the present $1,000.00 to $2,â€" 500.00. 21
