WHEREAS pollution of air and water has become a major problem in Canada; _ AND WHEREAS the phosphate content oi many laundry detergents is very high: AND WHEREAS by the use of these phos- phate content detergents we add greatly to the pollution hazard; THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the members of the Federated Women‘s Institutes of Ontario respectfully request the Resources Minister of the Federal Government to seek legislation to ban or control the amount of phosphates allowed in laundry detergents. Eastern Ontario Area WHEREAS at present the paint used in marking the center lines and divisional lines of the multiâ€"Iane highways becomes obliterated completely at times: in winter white lines are indistinguishable from snow: at night when pavement is wet, lines merge with the light reâ€" flections; THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Federated Women's Institutes of Ontario reâ€" quest the Department of Highways to increase their efforts in the study of light reflecting, long wearing paint; or developing new methâ€" ods of pavement markers imbedded in the highway surface; that prime consideration be given to areas where snow conditions exist up to five months of the year and to implement these better methods as soon as possible, Hamilton Area WHEREAS there has been a loss of life at night as a result of poor visibility at rural level railway crossings unmarked by flashing lights when a long freight train is crOssing; THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Federated Women's Institutes of Ontario do all in their power to bring pressure on the Depart- ment of Transport to make it mandatory that all railway box cars. coal cars, flat cars and caboose be marked by some type of fluores- cent paint in such a manner as to pick up headlights of an automobile.
