Lee Homestead Finance Committee The report of the Lee Homestead Finance Committee, prepared by Mrs. Russell Wise, Chairman, was read by Mrs. William G. Mill- er. Representation for financial assistance for [his project has been made to Hamilton and Burlington Councils and the Steel Company of Canada but no replies received. The Board accepted the resignations of Mrs. Russell Wise, who has been chairman of this Committee since it was formed and of Mrs. Allan Dickenson, a committee member. Mrs. Austin S. Zoeller was named Chairman of a continuing Committee and Mrs. Wm. G. Mill- er was appointed to replace Mrs. Dickenson. Announcement was made that approximate ly $8,500.00 has been subscribed to this Fund and a further $13,000.00 pledged to date, in- cluding donations promised from Stoney Creek Women‘s Institute, the County of Wentworth and the Federated Women‘s Institutes of Canâ€" ada. Hospitality Report A written report by Mrs. John Charlton, F.W.I.O. Hospitality Convener, outlined plans to welcome delegates from the Officers‘ Conâ€" ference to the Adelaide Hoodless Homestead on April 27th. A Board Director will act as hostess due to the resignation of Mrs. Ruby Lockman and Wentworth North District Presiâ€" dent, Mrs. Osborne Sager, with twenty of her Women’s Institute members will staff the Homestead for this occasion. On the second evening of the Board Meet~ ing two carloads of Directors visited the Hood- Iess Homestead at St. George. Royal Winter Fair Mrs. James Pilkington reported re the Royal Winter Fair Annual Meeting. The 1970 slogan was “Come for a walk in the country, Come to the Royal“, and public response was greater than in recent years. Every Province except Newfoundland was represented. There were entries from West Germany, Ireland, Mexico and the United States. Mr. W. P. Watson retired in March, 1971 having joined the Royal in 1922. He is suc- ceeded by Mr. John Moles as General Manager. Junior Institute Activities Miss Susan Eller, Junior Board Director, Presented the report of the Junior Women’s Institute Branches in Ontario and emphasized the advantages of provincial membership IfthJl-lgh information, program and project Ideas passed on from one Branch to another. Speciai meetings were held by the Junior Women's Institutes at Christmas, also a snow- mobile party. One group is making a quilt, SUMMER 'I 9'71 others attended the Food Forum "Add a Touch of You" and another used the pro- gramme kit on “Linens†from the Loan Liâ€" brary. Miss Eller is completing her second year as a Junior Board Director and she expressed her appreciatiOn of the interesting and knowledge- able experience it had been. Junior Institute Annual Mrs. David Brown, First-Year Board Direc- tor, read the report of the Second Annual Meeting of the Junior Women‘s Institutes of Ontario held at Teeswater on April 17th. See page 10. The Junior Women‘s Institutes Fall Confer- ence will be October 15 - 17 at the Montrose Motor Inn, Niagara Falls. Ontario Food Council Mrs. Edison Sine, a representative of F.W.l.0. on the Consumers‘ Section of the Ontario Food Council, gave a detailed report of their activities over the last five months. A food luncheon introduced those in attendance to new products, nectars made from surplus Ontario fruits and “Butterhead†lettuce. At other meetings reports were given on surveys undertaken in supermarket backrooms, on how the Department of Social Services for Metro Toronto organized meetings to help with problems of low income families and wel- fare recipients, i.e. homemaking, budgeting, cooking, etc. The booklet. “Your Food Costs" will be re- vised, updated and published as a “Fact Sheet". The Ontario Food Council has ap- proached three Ontario restaurants at Ontario Place, restaurants on Highways 400 and 401 and has asked them to use Ontario foods as much as possible. A letter was sent to the Fac- ulty of Food Science, University of Toronto, expressing dissatisfaction over a proposed clos- ing and later it was announced it will remain open this year. The Consumers†Committee is drawing up clear statements of their objectives and aims which are to serve as a liaison between the general public and the Food Council, with a representation from the Province as a whole. Their aim will be to improve market perform- ance and help consumers with selection, hanâ€" dling and use of food, to present consumer concerns in relation to food, and to give out information on situations and government pro grams. Discussion also centred on the Regulations Bill for packaging which has gone to the Senâ€" ate.
