The base of the lamp is made of driftwood, a cedar root picked up at a lake near Mrs. Hazzard’s home and handâ€"rubbed to make it smooth. The shade is a square of birch bark taken from a log eighteen inches in diameter W INTE ll 1964 in the Hazzards‘ wood lot. The birch bark is placed over a hristol hoard lining and buffed with hard floor wax for easier cleaning. Min- eral oil was applied to the bristol board to make it more transparent. A spray of juniper adds a dash of colour to the base of the lamp. Over one hundred lamp shades were made by Manitoulin women as a result of this ex- tension project in home furnishing. Briefs M EMBERS OF Chandos Institute visited a fur n i t u r e upholstering factory where, Mrs. Victor Tanner reports, they saw chairs “torn down to the bare wood." Then they watched as the workers tied the springs. padded the arms With foam rubber. added a new foam rubber cushion. sanded and varnished the wood and covered the upholstery part with a good cotton-hacked plastic. Back at home the women “did” a chair as they had seen the work done in the factory and offered it in a raffle to raise their share of funds to improve the town rink. Mrs. Tanner says: “The institute hoped to raise fifty dollars for their donation plus their expenses but the results exceeded all expectation.“ 1h 4» Recently when two oneâ€"roomed schools in Glanford township were closed. each school held a reunion for former pupils. At each reunion the local Institute. Maggie Johnson. presented gifts to the oldest man and the old- est woman. former pupils present at the re- union. We read in a press report that when the medical doctor at Bethany decided to move to the city, a delegation from Bethany Women's Institute met with the Township Council to ask them to take action to get another doctor, JI
