There is no industry which has not been profoundly changed by chemistry, and still further changes will be made as time goes on, On Monday evening 3 “Get ACquainted Party“ was held at which movies. taken by Miss Helen McKcrcher on her trip as a delegate to the A,C.W.W. Conference in Edinburgh. were shown, with Mrs. E. V. Thompson and Mrs. Clara Rhineheart as commentators. Mrs. Rhineheart. also a delegate. showed coloured slides of her trip. Games were played and refreshments were served. Talent Night on Thursday evening had many of the guests putting on impromptu acts. Mrs. B. A. Banks, an eighty-yearâ€"old member of Virgil branch, St. Catharines. gave a reading. using the alphabet introducing quotations from the Bible, She had learned this as a girl and remembered every word of it. There was singing, readings. novelty hat-making. skits and even a wrestling match, after which refreshments were scrvcd. The highlight of the week was the bus trip to Stratford Festival Park with a picnic lunch prepared by Miss K. Beck, O.A.C. dietician and her efficient staff. Later. most of the guests attended the performance of Romeo and Julie! at th: :ilrutiord Theatre. What One Woman Learned Mrs. George Kerr of Kent County to Miss McKercher gives some idea of what one woman learned at the Women‘s Institute Holiday. “The visit to Macdonald Institute's Nursery School convinced me that this is a wonderful way to teach girls to understand children. I ob- tained a list of books for parents. “I enjoyed the film on Household Manage ment and I sat down to peel potatoes this morn» ing. Will try to incorporate some of the labour. saving ideas in my kitchen. “Visited the Biology Building. Saw the insect collection and the library and decided to get Urquhart’s Insect Key, as probably the best for our stage of development. It is so nice to be able to see books before you buy them. I have already ordered this book. “Visited the rock garden and demonstrations in landscaping. Did you know the Edelweiss of the Swiss Alps grows in the rock garden? It is the plant that has caused so many deaths in the Alps. (People slip trying to reach for the flowersl I got a great deal of information about plants, paths and borders as we are doing some land- scaping. “I visited Macdonald Institute library and they Were kind enough to loan the three art books for the period of the holiday. Mr. Couling rec- ommended Paint, Painters and You by Bethers. I read it all by utilizing my spare minutes. The films Mr. Couling showed us were an inspira- tion and reason enough in themselves to take this holiday. TWO of them, I am going to try to obtain for one of our Institute meetings this fall. “I saw the banana tree in blossom. a truly lovely thing. and the hibiscus flowers were larger than any I have seen in Florida. The green- house is a wonderful place to learn about tropical plants. Made me want to visit Tahiti. Well, at least I’ll get out my Gauguin prints and realize that his colours really exist in the tropics. “Brought home a book on Weeds for my neighbour who works here. I am trying to en- courage him to learn as he works in the fields because some day he hopes to go to the O.A.C. "Learned some nursery songs for children from a book in Macdonald Institute library. “Probably other types of holidays would be useful but for me this Institute Holiday is the only time in the year when I have contact with a university and can get some desired knowledge- It was a very profitable and enjoyable holiday."
