A County Radio Project By Vida E. Hermansen group of Women‘s Institute members who are interested in bringing to the listening audience a knowledge of the work of the Women's Institutes of Ontario. Each broadcast is planned well in advance, and with the thought in mind that someone somewhere will benefit from its mes- sage. Programmes are planned around special days. where possible, and are made suitable for the time of the year. Thus. in May. a broadcast is to be made on “My Perennial Border.“ a topic in every- one‘s mind at that time of the year: and in June a message will be given on “Safety at the Summer Cottage," hoping to prepare the listener with some of the safety measures so necessary. The committee also strive to interest other people in the benefits to be gained by the Short Courses and Leadership Training Schools to be :iven. free. by the Home Economics Service of lhe Extension Branch of the Department of Agri- :ulture. Not forgotten. too. are the 4-H Home- 'naking Club girls and the Junior Institutes. who .vill tell of the very wonderful work done by their members. From time to time special guests are lsked to bring a message. and the Radio Commit- cc are very grateful to these busy women for :iking time to come, often a great distance. to :ive of their time and talents. How this Radio Committee came into existence s revealed in the following story. Always there \ one person who must be the leader in such a -enture. and in this particular story it is our \Irs. Gordon Maynard of Unionville. In the autumn of 1957 the manager of Radio nation CJRH. Richmond Hill. asked Mrs. Mary- nard to appear on the farm broadcast as a Wom~ -n‘s Institute member. The following weeks. Early in January I958 Mrs. Maynard called to her home the four district presidents, the four district secretaries and a few ladies from nearby Markham and Agincourl. Plans were drawn up to have each of the four districts of York County responsible for one month's programme. the topics to be based on the work of four of the Standing Committees of the Women's institute. The month of February was to be taken by Centre York with the topic. Home Economics and Hcallh. followed in March by Historical Rcscurch and Current Events by West York: in April. Agriculture and Canadian Industries by North York; and in May. Citizenship and Education by Fast York. .Iunc was to be a month for special guests. These broad- casts were well received by the radio audience of York County and surrounding areas. The next meeting of this group was at the York County Rally at Sloullvillc in July. when: a proâ€" gramme was planned for the summer months. This consisted mostly of interviews with Women's In» slillllL‘S. juniors and seniors. concerning the activi- ties of branch mcmbcrs. In early September. thirteen ludics met at the provincial otlicc to form a committee that would be responsible for the future programmes. Up to this time Mrs. h‘luynurd had carried all the respon- sibility and the ladies wished to relieve hcr. At this meeting the Radio ("ommillcc of the York County Women‘s Institutes was formed. to be under county administration. with the following tilliccrs: l’rcsi' dent. Mrs. H. A programme was drawn up for the full broud- casts. with every Institute in York (‘ounty receiv- ing a copy. Some of the highlights. and I can men- tion only a few. were: lulks on Resolutions. All the members taking purl had been from the few districts. with a few special guests. and each had performed her task well. In December of |958 the Radio Committee met once more in the provmcial otlicc to draw up the programme schedule for the first half of I959. 31
