The Canadian Department of Agriculture entertained the delegates at a luncheon, with the Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. D. S. Harkness as host. Mr. Harkness was very busy with the stored wheat problem of Sas- katchewan at the time of the convention but he appeared at the luncheon to tell the women that he hoped they would feel free to call on his Department at any time and that he would be happy to help in any way possible. The Ottawa Local Council of Women pro: vided a supper and a fashion show with Mrs. Frank Ryan as mistress of ceremony, models from Simpson Sears Ltd., and a panel on fashions and fabrics from the Primary Texâ€" tile Institute. Mrs. Clarence Graham and Mrs. Kearney conducted sessions of singing, so popular with the delegates that they became known as “Singspiration.†Along with professional entertainers at some of the sessions we had delightful demon- strations of Women's Institute talent in the Harwood Singers from Dorian, Quebec and the Women’s Institute Orchestra of Goshen, Ontario. At a luncheon session, Dr. Will R. Bird of the Nova Scotia Historic Sites Advisory Counâ€" cil and a well known author, gave an address: “Are There Any Canadians Here?" In this humorous talk Dr. Bird made a strong case for the idea that most of us are strongly proâ€" vincial in our feelings and correspondingly weak in our consciousness of being Canadians, “as if all the provinces were in arms against the nation except in time of war.“ It was at Passchendaele Dr. Bird said that he met his first Canadiansâ€"there were no provincial difâ€" ferences there. Roylancc. as convcnci‘, presented the following resolutions: A resolution from Quebec recommending to the Federal Parliament that Article 88 of the Criminal Code of Canada be amended to pro- hibit the import, manufacture or sale of air- guns and air-pistols or ammunition therefor and to prohibit the import, manufacture or sale of toy guns unless they are painted in bright colours such as red, yellow or green (to dis- tinguish them from real guns). (Carried) A resolution requesting the Government of Canada to amend the Criminal Code as ruc- ommended by the Fautcux Committee so that ï¬nes cannot be imposed at the same time as sentence of imprisonment in default of pay- ing a ï¬ne; and that at least seven days be allowed for the payment of 21 [inc or its ï¬rst instalment; that the Court must consider the economic position of the offender and of his family; where the offender is under twenty- one years of age he will be placed under supervision until the ï¬ne is paid; and that these provisions apply in indictment cases as well as in summary conviction casos. A recommendation from British Columbia that a comprehensive and sustained pro- gramme of research into the causes and mcans of prevention of mental illness be encouraged by the convention. (Carried) A resolution from Nova Scotia that thu Federated Women's Institutes of Canada give their support and become co-sponsors of National Farm Radio Forum. This was tabled to be dealt with by the Board. At their mock ing following the convention the Board voted to give full support to Farm Radio Forum but not to become a sponsor.
