Oï¬icers’ Conference and Diamond Jubilee HIS YEAR the ninth annual Ontario Women’s Institute Ofï¬cers’ Conference was also made the occasion for a cele» bration of the Institutes’ sixtieth anniversary or Diamond Jubilee; but as most of the branches had held their own local celebrations on the actual anniversary date. February 19. most of the time at this provincial gathering was given to the business of the Conference. When Mrs. James Haggerty, the Institutes provincial president, asked how many of the delegates were attending an otï¬cers’ confer- ence for the ï¬rst time, about ninety per cent of the women responded, so there is no ques- tion that these annual conferences are reach- ing a great number of Institute women, and giving them a contact with their agricultural college. As the F.W.I.O. board meeting had Immediately preceded the conference most of the board members stayed for the conference. assisting in any way they could. Each of the three Regional Vice-Presidents. SUMMER 1957 THE INSTITUTES AND THE COLLEGE As the conference clclcgatcs arrived at the College they were taken on tours of the cam- pus and Macdonald Institute. and at a meeting that evening they learned more about the rcâ€" lation of the College to thc pcoplc of rural Ontario. Rev. W. A. Young, College chaplain and Director of Publicity, outlined the courses in Agriculture, the four year degree course and thc twoayear diploma course. Mr. Young ex- plained how the complexities of present-day farming make it necessary for the farmer to have specialized education. The diploma course is planned to meet the needs of the man who will go into practical farming and take his place in the life of his community. The graduates of the degree course may go into practical farming too, but they will he titted for the professional ï¬eld in such specialâ€" ties as research. teaching. extension work. “If we haven't the right kind of young person coming up on our farms, there‘s no future for agriculture." said Padre Young.
