CELEBRATING 5 Wallacetown WI Members and guests ofthe Wallacetown WI (London Area) gathered on July 12, 2012 at the South Dunwich Hall to celebrate the Branch’s 100th Anniversary. Guest speakers included Mayor of Dutton/Dunwich Cameron McWilliam, MP Joe Preston, MPP Jeff Yurek, and Elgin County Warden Bill Waters. A history of Wallacetown WI was provided by Louie Lackey. Formed on July 3, 1912, the Wallacetown WI had 36 Members in its first year. Today, Wallacetown WI supports many groups and organizations such as the Talbot Teen Centre, Fresh Start Maternity Supports, Second Stage Housing, the Elgin Museum, 4â€"H Club, and the Daffodil Society. With money raised through the sale of Tweedsmuir History Books, the Branch was able to donate $5,000 to upgrade the South Dunwich Hall. The event was well attended with approximately 80 guests including politicians, Members from other Women‘s Institutes and family. RlGHT:Jose Poole and Helen McDonald get ready to cut the cake. In order to become acquainted with, reflect on the past 100 years, and plan for the future in a relaxed celebratory atmosphere, the Members met on January 6, 2012 to view a PowerPoint Presentation of the group’s activities and achievements. The next celebration took place on July 17th. Members of Kars WI and nearby Branches,togetherwith their relativesand friends,enjoyed a Boat Cruise on the Rideau King. Then, on October 27th, there was a Centennial Tea in the Kars R.A. Hall with local historian and Kars WI Tweedsmuir Coordinator Coral Lindsay as the guest speaker. Her topic was historical events. A poem on being a WI Member was read by Lois Brownlee, the longest serving Member of the Branch. Messages were received from the Governor General, FWIO President and other dignitaries. Jean Cowan and Muriel Mercer were recipients of Branch Life Membership. Kars WI Member, Nyamme Samuels, was the vocal soloist. WI displays with Tweedsmuir History Books and artifacts, a Queen’s Diamond Jubilee display, and the continuous PowerPoint Presentation in the background provided a memorable and festive atmosphere to the afternoon’s event. In commemoration of this special year, the Kars WI Centennial Stamp was revealed.
